According to the AARP, “isolation increases the risk of mental and physical illnesses. In fact, the health risks of prolonged isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” One of the major reasons for isolation is age-related hearing loss.
80% of individuals over the age of 85 have some sort of hearing loss but less than 1 in 5 of those affected by hearing loss actually wear a hearing aid. Hearing loss is not only tied to social isolation, but also increased dementia risk and an increased rate of premature death.
