On Aug. 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation declaring the first Sunday of September following Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The purpose of the legislation was to honor grandparents and celebrate their many contributions. Grandparents support their grandchildren by sharing family stories, babysitting, passing down traditions, and providing love and support.
On Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020, the staff at Arbor Terrace Lakeway hosted a Grandparents Day morning celebration for the residents. Each resident received a beautiful fall-themed coffee mug filled to the brim with treats. The community’s award-winning chef baked delicious pastries to accompany specially brewed coffee.
“We drink coffee every day. What a great gift,” said resident Hellen Cooper.
Resident Bill Frye chimed in, “the coffee tastes even better.”
Residents also received a personalized card decorated with colorful hands with messages written by staff members recognizing their contributions to their families. Celebrations continued throughout the day as residents video chatted and talked with their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family members. Laughter filled the halls as they recalled memories of summer vacations, holidays and family gatherings.
The Grandparents Day celebration honored the residents' achievements and dedication to their families.
Resident Lynne Hickey summed up the day’s events the best: “Thanks for a very special day!”
