Arbor Terrace Knoxville seeks to honor and support our nation’s veterans all year long. Recently, seven residents were invited to go to new heights with a little help from Dream Flights, a nonprofit on a mission to give our nation’s veterans an opportunity for a special trip. The seven veterans from Arbor Terrace enjoyed a 20-minute flight, taking in views of Knoxville from the air, piloted by a volunteer pilot. They were later featured on WATE.
On their flight aboard a Stearman biplane, a World War II-era trainer plane, our residents took in the beautiful aerial views and reminisced over their time in the service. A Stearman biplane was a commonly used plane during the 1930s and 40s and is familiar to some passengers who are former aviators themselves.
Dream Flights has provided more than 6,000 flights, nationwide, allowing hundreds of senior, military veterans the opportunity of a lifetime. Dream Flights’ mission is to give back and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Their mission is carried out with the help of donors and volunteer pilots, willing to give their time to honor those who have served.
Not only does Dream Flights provide veterans with a unique opportunity to fly, but also an opportunity to reminisce and connect. According to their mission statement, “We [Dream Flights] collect, preserve, and share those stories of how they survived through times of great strife to remind us of our shared humanity, our connection to each other, and the value of listening.”
Arbor Terrace Knoxville is dedicated to providing residents opportunities for enriching engagement at any age - trying new things or embracing familiar hobbies. Dream Flights made this a reality for seven special passengers, allowing them to relive cherished memories.
