Staying active is important as you age. Regular exercise and movement can increase range of motion and strength. Healthy socialization with peers can also lead to decreased depression for older adults. Fortunately, there are plenty of active seniors in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to move with, chat with, and age gracefully with! Here are a few ideas to get you moving and keep you active in the West Chester area.

Hit the Trails

The Chester County area offers a variety of well-maintained, safe, and beginner-friendly trails. Lace up your tennis shoes for a walk or tune up your bicycle for a ride. Try the Chester Valley Trail, the Schuylkill River Trail, or the Struble Trail. Walking or riding is more fun with friends (and the time passes more quickly), so consider asking a pal or neighbor to join you.

Take a Trip

Consider traveling with new and old friends by signing up for a bus trip through the West Chester Parks and Recreation Department. Upcoming trips for 2019 include adventures to New York City for the holiday season, and its 2020 trips are sure to be excellent as well.

Get to Know Someone New

We love the West Chester Senior Center’s Grand Friends program. Each year, it positively affects the lives of seniors and kids alike, making our city flourish. Twice per week through the school year, seniors and kids meet up to get to know one another and have some fun together. Everyone leaves the program feeling great and learning something new.

Take an Exercise Class

Speaking of the West Chester Senior Center, consider taking any number of their group exercise classes. Ranging from yoga to aerobics to SilverSneakers® circuits, classes are offered Mondays through Fridays. You’ll get a great workout and meet a group of new friends along the way.

Shop and Dine

Active seniors in West Chester know that activity doesn’t have to be limited to socials and exercise classes. Sometimes strolling around the neighborhood to grab a bite to eat and be inspired by a beautiful shop can be just what the doctor ordered. Fortunately, the West Chester area is chock-full of locally owned shops and restaurants, just waiting for you to discover them.

Take a Class

Living in a college town certainly has its perks, and active seniors in West Chester can always choose to take a class at West Chester University. The school offers free tuition to senior citizens if space is available in the class you are interested in. It’s the perfect reason to recommit to new learning opportunities and experience a taste of college life.

Check Out the Library

The West Chester Public Library is beautiful and cozy, giving you an excuse to settle in for an afternoon of reading and exploring. Talk to the librarians to get a recommendation for your next favorite book or join in on one of their events. Their calendar is full of programs you will surely want to take advantage of, and it gives you another way to connect with your neighbors.
