Ideas for Seniors To Celebrate Valentine's Day in Asheville

The weather may be a little warmer than we’re used to for February in North Carolina, but signs of midwinter still abound: The trees are bare, the nights are long, and it’s just not quite nice enough to spend time outdoors enjoying the mountain views. But February also means Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and the holiday is a great excuse to shake off the winter blues and share some warmth with those you love. If you’re having trouble deciding how to spend Valentine’s Day in Asheville, this post is for you! Read on for some of our top ideas for how to celebrate with your senior loved one.

1. Visit the Biltmore

There’s no bad time to visit the beautiful Biltmore Estate. Though the grounds may not be as lush as they’ll become in the spring, ticket prices are lower this time of year, and there’s still plenty to do! Adventurous spirits might enjoy a hike or a bike tour, or a more relaxing carriage ride. Others might want to indulge in a spa day to show themselves some Valentine’s love, enjoying a massage or splurging for a specialty facial. And for a limited time, fans of the hit TV show “Downton Abbey” can step back in time and experience the romance and elegance of the show in a special interactive exhibit.

2. Tour a Winery

Another year-round draw of the Biltmore is its winery. Stop by for a complimentary tasting or to try a locally made truffle. For those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at winemaking, the Biltmore also offers a winery tour. But if you’re looking for something a little more casual, there are plenty of wineries to explore in the Asheville area! Visit plēb urban winery and chat with the owners about their passion for wine and for western North Carolina. Not much of a wine drinker? Try Noble, a local cidery that grows its own apples.

3. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to enjoy a sweet treat, and Asheville has plenty of options. Visit one of Baked Pie Company’s two locations for a fresh slice — or, if you can’t pick just one, enjoy a “pie flight,” which includes three mini-slices and a scoop of ice cream! Many grocery stores throughout Asheville carry locally made, gluten-free products from Dolci di Maria. Indulge in a made-to-order doughnut at Hole Doughnuts, which also serves coffee from Asheville favorite PennyCup Coffee. For a more traditional Valentine’s treat, pick out some handmade chocolates at French Broad Chocolate or Asheville Chocolate.

4. Enjoy a Special Night Out

There’s nothing like a traditional Valentine’s dinner date. Make a reservation for your senior parents, or join your loved one for an intimate evening of great food and conversation. Enjoy a taste of France at the “romantic, intimate, and charming” Bouchon. Get the full family-style Italian experience at Vinnie’s. Visit The Blackbird in downtown Asheville for a “modern Southern” menu that rotates seasonally. If none of these options is making your mouth water, check out Romantic Asheville’s restaurants guide!

5. Stroll Through the Arboretum

In addition to the Biltmore Estate and a plethora of local food and drink options, Asheville is home to the North Carolina Arboretum. The Arboretum draws visitors from all over the state all year long, and you’ve got access to it right in your backyard! If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the trail and garden map and take a long, beautiful walk with a loved one. Enjoy any number of kid-friendly activities with the grandkids. Or take advantage of the free “Sweets with Your Sweetie” hot chocolate bar the Arboretum is hosting just for Valentine’s Day weekend!
