Although the terms nursing home and assisted living are often used interchangeably, these two types of senior care have key differences. Nursing home is sometimes used to describe all types of senior living care; however this is not an accurate description. Nursing homes and assisted living communities are tailored to meet the specific needs of seniors with varying levels of care. In this post, we will explore the key differences between nursing homes and assisted living communities in Roseland, NJ.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes provide more frequent and complex skilled nursing care. This type of senior living is ideal for someone who has more acute medical needs or will progressively need more care as time goes on. If they need assistance with most daily tasks, like eating, transferring from a wheelchair into bed, and general mobility, a nursing home has staff available 24/7 to help. Special meal assistance for those who require liquid diets or feeding tube accommodations are also available in a nursing home setting.

Rooms in a nursing home may be private or shared. These bedroom type living spaces do not typically include a kitchenette since meals are prepared for the residents throughout the day. Some nursing homes require a doctor’s recommendation, acknowledging that the individual has valid reason to need this high level of care on a consistent, more permanent basis.

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living communities provide a more independent atmosphere for seniors. This neighborhood is ideal for anyone looking to maintain a level of self-sufficiency while requiring assistance with a few daily tasks. This may include dressing, bathing, toileting, and overseeing medication.

These neighborhoods offer apartment-style living that can be enjoyed independently or with a similarly aged family member or friend. In-suite kitchenettes are typically available so residents can choose to cook or utilize the shared community dining room. Some assisted living communities require residents to meet certain cognitive and physical requirements to ensure their safety and well-being.

Similarities

Both types of senior living options provide enhanced safety, security, and social opportunities. Nursing homes largely focus on taking care of their residents on-campus, while assisted living communities may offer activities and amenities on-campus as well as in the local community with provided transportation. Both provide housekeeping, laundry, medication management, and other amenities to ease the burden of daily tasks.

Having centers for various treatments, such as physical or occupational therapy, are common in both types of communities as well. Nursing homes may have a wider variety or schedule of services available, but assisted living facilities typically have regular transportation for appointments scheduled nearby.
