Autumn is beautiful in Morris County, New Jersey. The leaves are showing off their colors, the temperatures are perfect for adventures during the day and cozying up by the fire at night, and there are plenty of excuses to have a seasonal treat from the bakery. Be sure to take advantage of the sights and sounds of fall, before the weather gets a bit chillier and before your calendar gets even more crowded with holiday gatherings.

If autumn isn’t your favorite time of year, you may be convinced after trying just a few of our favorite fall activities in Morris County.

Enjoy the Parks

The Morris County area features a thriving park commission that offers a variety of programs throughout the area. Check out its monthly calendar and consider attending any one of its events. We especially love the culture and education of Lenape Day (October 12), the Grand Harvest Wine Festival (October 12-13) and the Park Palooza (October 5).

Explore New Places

If you are new to the Morris County area, or if you are a local looking to treat visitors to something new and exciting, consider exploring venues like Fosterfields Living Historic Farm or the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Both places offer a unique look at the scenery of the Morris County area and are excellent spots to visit again and again.

Lace Up Your Shoes

Fall is best experienced while outdoors! Lace up your favorite shoes and hit any of the trails in Morris County’s 18,704 acres of public lands. You can walk a favorite trail or try a new spot to catch local wildlife. Or, bring a pair of binoculars to try your hand at birding.

Try Something Pumpkin Spice

Head to any of the local coffee shops scattered throughout Morris County to find the best pumpkin spice latte. Or, try a little something from every shop. If you don’t like pumpkin spice, opt for a warm apple cider instead, and always pair your drink with a seasonal bakery treat.

Hit the Pumpkin Patch

Everyone, no matter their age, can enjoy a trip to the pumpkin patch. Morris County offers a variety of options, and you can take advantage of hayrides, treats, and produce markets while you choose your perfect pumpkin.

Check Out a Festival

Better temperatures and overall weather make autumn ideal for large community festivals. Try out the Great Pumpkin Festival by driving less than an hour to Vernon, or to the Fall Harvest Festival in nearby Chester. Or, venture less than 40 minutes south to explore historical Somerset County during their Weekend Journey Through the Past.

Host Your Own Event

The fall season is also a good time to host your own event for family or friends at your home. Serve coffee on your patio with a favorite treat, or cook a big pot of chili to enjoy during a football game. No matter what you choose to do, your guests will love the opportunity to catch up with one another before the hustle and bustle of the upcoming holiday season.

Getting out and about is important for seniors during all times of the year, not just the fall. Healthy socialization and physical activity have been linked to decreased depression, decreased anxiety, and even decreased memory loss. If you are feeling a bit lonely this year or would like to find a friend to explore with, you could benefit from the relationships built in senior living communities.

At Arbor Terrace Morris Plains, our dedicated team of senior care professionals strives to offer engaging activities and events to all of our residents. We love finding programs that give our residents the chance to try new things, experience new things, and meet new people.
