Flying for leisure travel can feel risky during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than ever, Americans are going back to the good old days of summer road trips as an alternative. The Arbor Terrace Fulton community decided to follow suit recently by spending the week taking a virtual road trip across the United States via Route 66, highlighting various states, parks, landmarks and even some roadside attractions.

Residents shared memories of their previous family road trips, while engaging in an interactive map activity where they highlighted destinations they’ve visited or dream of seeing one day.

"It brought back such great memories touring the town of Orefield, Pa., where my husband and I went on several dates to see drive-in movies at one of the roadside attractions highlighted," said resident Bridie Brader.

"This week’s road trip theme is making me so happy and bringing back such great memories of the roadside ice cream shop in my college town of Bedford, Ma., and to top it off, we had ice cream sandwiches for our snack that day," said resident Amanda Esker.

In addition to learning state trivia and creating postcards from their favorite visited states, the road trip week ended with lots of laughs during the showing of the movie “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
