A happy and fulfilling retirement doesn’t require year-round warm temperatures and beach access. Indeed, a suburban retirement can be chock full of cultural, recreational, and social opportunities if you know where to look. Close enough to Chicago for a quick day trip, but full of a life of its own, Park Ridge, Illinois, is a lovely city that would make an ideal retirement location. Living in the Chicago northwest suburbs is ideal for a senior who wants easy access to public transportation, a vibrant neighborhood, and family members who may live in the area.

If you are considering a more urban retirement, you are in good company. Many Baby Boomers and older adults are choosing to live in city environments. These urban areas allow seniors to walk to places of interest, from restaurants to grocery stores, and offer more opportunities to connect with peers and the greater community. What's more, Park Ridge boasts excellent senior programming, resources, and support as well as easy access to local spots and even Chicago.

Around Town

With easy access to public transportation to get you to and from any errands or appointments, you don’t have to worry about driving as often as you would if you lived in a less urban area. In addition to the city layout perfect for seniors and visitors, Park Ridge also boasts excellent resources and opportunities. The park district's S.T.A.R. (Seniors Together at Recreation) membership offers seniors unlimited access to the Centennial Senior Center and other activities run through the park district. Thanks to engaging programs, presentations, and trips, you will have no problem meeting new friends or connecting with old ones.

Besides the excellent park district programs, the Park Ridge library features senior-focused programming as well as events suitable for all ages. All of this activity can work up quite the appetite, and you’ll have no problem finding a restaurant that fulfils your cravings. In fact, you will probably have a hard time choosing just one favorite spot in town! No matter the season, you can always find a fun activity or event in Park Ridge.

Park Ridge also offers stellar community resources for seniors. The local Center of Concern is a hub of information that equips seniors to live healthy and independent lives. Seniors in the Park Ridge area have benefitted from this program for over 40 years.

Around Chicago

If you are looking for another adventure, you are only a short trip away from enjoying everything the city of Chicago has to offer. An outing to “the city” is perfect for a solo ride or a group tour with visiting family or friends. If you choose to drive, you are only 30 minutes from Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. But why worry about traffic and parking when Park Ridge is a stop on the Metra line? Simply jump aboard and quickly arrive in downtown Chicago without the stress of taking your own vehicle. (Plus, a train ride is always a fun treat for visiting grandkids.)

Once in the city, you have access to some of the best museums and cultural opportunities in the country. Take advantage of the free Lincoln Park Zoo or city beaches along the Lake Michigan shore as well as the specialized neighborhoods—don’t miss Chinatown or Greektown! In the winter months, you can enjoy seeing the city dressed up for the holidays and cozy up at a theatre performance. In the summer, check out the many street festivals, or take a cruise along the Chicago River. You will love not only being so close to Chicago, but also being able to return home to your suburban apartment.
