The skies are blue and the temperatures are rising, which means it is finally summertime here in Chicagoland! The spring season this year was odd in many ways; the coronavirus pandemic, below normal temperatures, and extreme rain kept most suburban dwellers tucked inside their homes. Now that the weather is finally cooperating, it’s the perfect time of year to venture outside for some safe activity. Here are a few of our favorite summer tips for seniors to help you and your senior loved ones have a healthy and fun season.

Visit the Riverwalk

You don’t have to trek into the city to have some summer fun. Instead, stick close to home by exploring the Naperville Riverwalk. This accessible trail system offers the ideal morning or evening activity. You can discover new favorite fountains or sculptures as well as take advantage of outdoor dining or safe shopping in any of the surrounding local businesses. Remember to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated and take plenty of breaks to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Visit Local Gardens

The western suburbs are full of beautiful places to spend an afternoon outdoors. Consider checking out the Morton Arboretum or Cantigny Park, both of which are lovely and accessible. You can spend all afternoon on the trails at the former or venture indoors at the latter to learn more about the Army’s famous 1st Infantry Division at an on-site museum dedicated to the Big Red One. If you find yourself falling in love with either location, becoming a member might be a good decision for your wallet (and you get extra benefits and perks to enjoy all year).

Try a New Restaurant

Restaurants all over the Chicago suburbs are now offering expanded delivery and curbside pickup options. This means you can try some local restaurants that you haven’t before, offering you the chance to dive into some new cuisine right in the comfort of your own home. Ask for recommendations from friends and neighbors and don’t be afraid to try something new.

Research Before You Go

Finally, before you go into the city this summer or drive anywhere new, ensure that you call before you jump in the car. Guidelines are quickly changing, and local businesses or parks that were not open today might be open tomorrow. Don’t get to your destination only to be disappointed that they are closed or operating under new restrictions; take the time to call all of your planned destinations for the day ahead of time. Remember: Be flexible and patient as everyone adapts to evolving rules.

Stay Safe and Healthy

As you head out to explore the suburbs this summer, ensure that you are packing supplies that will keep you safe and healthy. Always have a water bottle on hand as well as any medications you might need while on the go. Apply and reapply sunscreen as necessary and don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses too. Also make sure that you have a mask with you in case you need it and always practice safe social distancing. Finally, wash your hands often and keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket in case you aren’t near a sink.

If you are finding that your current living situation does not give you the chance to explore and experience the sweet traditions of summertime, it could be time to finally invest in senior living. Senior living communities across the Chicagoland area feature activity calendars full of fun summer activities, such as smoothie-making classes and live outdoor concerts. Residents can take advantage of delicious chef-prepared meals, friendly neighbors, and assistance from caregivers too.
