Happy July birthday to Ethel Hunsicker, a resident of Arbor Terrace Peachtree City, who turned 98 on July 24!
Born in Virginia in 1922, Hunsicker remembers the Great Depression.
“We didn’t get to do much and we didn’t have electricity during those years," she recalled. "Things eventually got better, but it took awhile.”
She met her husband in 1943 and they married in 1944. He served for four years during World War II. That was a source of worry, of course, but she says the longest year of her life was the year her son was deployed to Vietnam. Thankfully, he made it back ok.
After raising three children, Hunsicker began her career as a secretary in the Virginia Capitol building.
“I wanted to be a secretary since the time I was 8 years old,” she said. “And I loved it!”
Today, she’s the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
So what’s Hunsicker’s secret to longevity?
“I’m not sure, but I’ll tell you one thing,” she said. “I’m the only one here who can hear well without hearing aids. I’ve had perfect hearing. I’m so thankful.”
Hunsicker also enjoys a glass of wine every night before bedtime. Her son Douglas, who lives nearby in Peachtree City, brings her bottles of her favorite red wine.
“I just have a small glass,” she said. “And it's so good! My doctor says it’s ok, so I took his word for it."
Hunsicker has resided at Peachtree City for more than eight years, and while she misses visits with her family due to the pandemic, she’s happy here.
“I’m thankful I can live here comfortably,” she said. “They’ve been mighty good to me. I couldn’t be in a better place.”
