Hallmarks of a Good Assisted Living Floor Plan
No two assisted living communities are exactly alike. And even within the same community, there are often several different floor plans to choose from. So what makes a good floor plan? Some hallmarks to look for, no matter what size you choose, include:
- Safety: Is the apartment designed with safety in mind? Are there grip bars for balance, and a tub that allows for easy, safe bathing?
- Efficient use of space: Large doors that open into living areas, inefficient closets, and needlessly oversized kitchen appliances waste space. Choose an apartment that maximizes every nook and cranny.
- Attractive design: You’ve worked hard to retire. So you deserve an attractive apartment. The right floor plan features subtle luxuries, quality flooring, and other touches that make the space truly feel like home.
- Privacy: If you choose to live with a roommate, make sure the space maximizes privacy. No one likes feeling like they can’t get a moment to themselves, or that they’re living on top of another person.
- The community: Though it’s important to choose an apartment you like, the community in which it is located is just as important. A luxury apartment won’t do much for your well-being if it’s located in a dull, boring community with few activities or bad food.
Value: It’s easy to focus on price, but what matters most is value. What are you getting for your hard-earned money? Our Senior Living Cost Calculator can help you compare the costs of various senior living options to the cost of remaining at home.

How to Choose the Right Assisted Living Floor Plan for Your Needs
The ideal assisted living community floor plan for you might be quite different from what your child, your best friend, or your neighbor would choose for you. So it’s important to tour each community and look at the floor plans you are considering. A few questions can help you decide which option best suits your needs:
- Do I have any physical limitations? If so, it’s important to prioritize safety and choose an accessible floor plan.
- What activities are most important to me? The right floor plan can make your hobbies easier or harder. If you love indoor gardening, you might want a big window. If you’re an accomplished chef, ensure that you have plenty of kitchen space. Movie buffs might prefer a larger living area.
- Which items do I want to take with me? Ensure that there’s space for the possessions that matter to you most.
- What will this space look like when I decorate it and add my stuff? Design your apartment here.
- What do I envision my new home looking like? Sometimes you have to just trust your gut. You want a place that feels like home. So spend some time envisioning your space, then select a floor plan that aligns with that vision.
