Planning Your Visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden

Written by Ashton Arnold | Feb 3, 2020 6:05:00 PM

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a continually evolving, year-round living garden. As a hub of horticultural education in the Southeast, it offers classes, special events, and even plant sales. In 2015, its Gainesville location opened its doors to Georgians living north of the city. Located a short drive from Buckhead, the Botanical Garden is the perfect place to spend a day. Membership is just $78 per year for an individual— less than you’d pay for two Garden tickets. So join today and relish a year of natural splendor.

Everyday Exhibits

ABG exhibits change from month to month, so check out the interactive Garden guide to plan your trip. Drop by on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 for live feedings of the Garden’s rare and endangered amphibians. Then stroll through the succulent garden and say hello to the Garden’s Madagascar tortoises. While you’re there, enjoy fine dining at Longleaf Restaurant, which boasts elegant surroundings and a kids’ menu for the picky little people in your life.

Kid- and Family-Friendly Events

The ABG is committed to raising a generation of conservation-minded nature lovers. It offers plenty of special events for kids and families, including annual Easter egg dyeing, a summer camp, and art classes. Families can drop in for garden playtime every Tuesday, March through October. Enjoy storybook time every Wednesday from April through October. Check out recurring Sprouting Scientists classes, which teach toddlers all about nature, science, and even engineering.

Special Occasions

The Garden hosts a number of events for members, including its lunch and learn series and its quarterly celebrations. Check out the annual spring Garden Party, classes on everything from orchids to beekeeping, and the annual Valentine’s Day gala, which boasts perfume-making, chocolate, dinner, and more.

For Orchid Lovers

Retirement is a great time to refocus your attention on one of the world’s most lovely — but finicky — plant groups: the orchid. With thousands of species, there’s truly a great flower selection for everyone. The Atlanta Botanical Garden has one of the largest orchid gardens in the United States. It grows and clones dozens of rare orchids in its lab, which you can observe for yourself. Or, borrow a book from the Garden’s massive orchid library. Orchid season reaches its peak at ABG in February, when Orchid Daze kicks off. Check out fabulous blooms, then take home some orchids of your own at the orchid market. Or master the fine art of orchid growing with an orchid class, while getting help with the orchids you already own at the orchid care clinic.
