Even residents of Gwinnett County, Georgia, in the northern region of the Atlanta suburbs may be surprised to learn that it’s the second most populous county in the state, second only to Fulton County. According to the World Population Review, Gwinnett has almost 950,000 residents.
But despite the number of people who live there, Gwinnett County is known for its green space. The county is home to 50 award-winning parks totaling more than 10,000 acres of parkland.
One of the most popular of these parks is the 200-acre Rabbit Hill Park in Dacula. Almost every kid in the county who plays sports has played here at some point. There are eight soccer fields, seven baseball fields, a football field that is also multipurpose, a sand volleyball court, and an outdoor basketball court.
Despite its obvious attractions for kids and families, the park is also a great place for seniors to visit for the day.
Here’s what you’ll need to have a great outing at Rabbit Hill Park.
Bring Your Walking Shoes (or Your Bicycle)
The park offers several paved trails of differing length for walking or biking, The longest trail is a 2.6-mile loop around the entire park. The trail around the multipurpose field remains well lit after dark.
Bring Your Grandkids
When the park was renovated in 2013, designers added some extras that make it a children’s favorite.
- First, there’s a multilevel playground with equipment designed for kids of all ages.
- Then, there’s a dinosaur area with fossil-like structures kids can climb.
- There is also a small, man-made stream that kids can splash around in on hot days.
Bring Your Dog
Pet owners rave about the dog park at Rabbit Hill. It’s a large area with plenty of shade, and there are separate places for big and small dogs to play.
Bring Water and Sunscreen
Fill a water bottle before you come to the park and don’t forget to wear sunscreen. You can get sunburn even when the days are cooler.
Bring a Picnic
There are plenty of tables where you can have your lunch, some of them under the park’s pavilion while others are closer to the pond. Keep an eye out for ducks and geese on the water.
Bring Your Camera
You’ll want to take pictures of your grandkids, your dogs, or the lush landscape around you.
