10 Fun Summer Activities for Seniors

No matter how old you are, summertime is a fun time. For kids, summer means at least two months of freedom from school. As a young adult, it might mean hanging out at the beach or the pool. As a parent, it could mean packing the car and taking a family road trip.

And even if you’re older now, that’s still no reason to spend your summer sitting around. Check out some of these fun summer activities for seniors who are living in the northern part of Georgia.

Take a Hike

Gwinnett County has dozens of parks with hiking trails for all skill levels, places to picnic, and playgrounds for the grandchildren. Freeman's Mill Park even has a historic gristmill to explore.

Go Fishing

Twin Bridges Lake in Lawrenceville is a 10-acre lake that’s teeming with catfish. They have fishing poles for rent and bait for sale.

If you have your own fishing gear, there are plenty of area ponds and streams to fish in. The lake at Little Mulberry Park has several good fishing holes.

Become a Bird-Watcher

There are more than 300 species of birds to see in Georgia. All you need to get started is a guidebook and maybe a pair of binoculars.

Pick Blueberries

The state of Georgia has a long blueberry season, running from April through July. In 2014, the state produced 96 million pounds of blueberries. There are many area farms where you can go to pick them yourself, including Fleemans Blueberries in Winder and DJ's U-Pick Blueberry Farm in Lawrenceville.

Grow a Garden

Whether you are growing flowers or produce, there is something very satisfying about nurturing plants from seeds to blooms. If you don’t have a yard that’s suitable for gardening, try a window garden kit.

Play Bocce, Horseshoes, or Shuffleboard

The recently renovated Ronald Reagan Park in Lawrenceville now includes courts for these fun outdoor games.

Play Golf

A warm, sunny day is a great time to be out on the golf course. If you’ve never played before, ask staff at the pro shop if you can take a few lessons. Area public courses include Trophy Club Apalachee in Dacula and Collins Hill Golf Club in Lawrenceville.

Go Antiquing

Most small Georgia towns have at least one antique shop. The town of Braselton is home to three: Countryside Antiques, Braselton Antique Mall, A Flea An'tique.

Go to the Mall

The Forum on Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners is an open-air mall where you can shop at many stores without spending the day trapped inside.

Head to the Lake

There’s so much to do at Lake Lanier, from fishing to boating to hanging out on the beach. There are also brunch cruises on the weekends.
