Because of COVID-19 health concerns, Fernandina Beach’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display has been canceled.
But don’t let the lack of a giant communitywide celebration spoil your July 4 fun. There are plenty of ways for seniors to enjoy America’s favorite summer holiday at home.
Attend a Virtual Celebration
The Public Broadcasting Service’s star-spangled “A Capitol Fourth” concert and celebration starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. If history is any indication, this 40th-anniversary event is sure to impress. Past concerts have featured performances from musical superstars including Frankie Valli, Patti LaBelle, John Williams, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, and Tony Bennett, to name a few.
Visit the PBS website for more information about “A Capitol Fourth” — or to learn about the history of Independence Day, listen to John Philip Sousa’s famous patriotic marches and watch some spectacular fireworks.
Express Your Patriotic Side
Nothing says Fourth of July like red, white, and blue! Create a party atmosphere at home with some of the hundreds of easy patriotic projects on the internet that you can finish in an afternoon. From festive door wreaths and flowerpots to rustic Americana table settings, a quick trip to the local craft store is all you need to have your flags flying by July 4.
If you aren’t particularly crafty, check out this YouTube tutorial that walks you through creating eight fun, festive Fourth of July decorative projects. Or this video that shows you how to make amazing holiday-themed projects out of items you can buy at a dollar store.
Grill Your Favorite July 4 Foods
Arguably the best part of celebrating Independence Day is the food. If you can’t make it to the community cookout this year, bring the cookout to your kitchen or patio.
You can’t go wrong with classic hamburgers and hot dogs, but if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, try a new spin on an old favorite. This Food Network slideshow provides 10 new takes on hamburgers (with pictures that will have you heading to the store immediately). If hot dogs are more your speed, check out these regional hot dog favorites from across the USA. Seems appropriate considering that we are all about celebrating America today!
This easy flag cake favorite is always a hit on the Fourth of July, but if you're looking for a healthier dessert, these patriotic parfaits are perfection.
Thank a Veteran or Share Your Own Military Experience with Someone
America’s Independence Day is the perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on our freedom and the men and women who fight and have fought to maintain it.
If you know someone who is active or retired military, take a minute and say thanks. If you served in the military, share an important experience with a friend or family member. When we pass along our stories, they will always be remembered.
Though this will certainly be a Fourth of July like no other, seniors don’t have to miss out on the things that make the day special. With a little creativity, we can celebrate safely without saying no to fun. And before long, we will be back out enjoying all of the activities that make Amelia Island the best place for senior living.
