“Some angels choose fur instead of wings.”

Anybody who has ever owned a pet knows how true this beautiful saying is. The love and loyalty of a companion animal can be truly meaningful in a person’s life; they are simply family.

Thanks to The Lakeside at Amelia Island’s pet-friendly policy, the community is fortunate to have several furry angels among its residents. They are pure bred and rescues, young and senior, playful and couch potatoes. But they all have something in common: These pets make their owners’ lives so much richer, joyful and fun.

Cuddles is a white-and-tan, 2-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix rescued from the local Humane Society by resident Joyce Mazurek. He sleeps a lot and will not go on a walk with anyone but Mazurek. But she assures everybody that Cuddles is still very friendly.

Also rescued from the Humane Society was Calvin, a long-haired Himalayan cat that is 4 years old. Resident Jeanette Nichols fell in love with him when she saw his photo in the newspaper. You can find Calvin perching on top of the cabinets and other high points around the apartment. “Intelligent, fast and sneaky” is how Nichols describes her beautiful, blue-eyed companion.

After her husband died, Sally Allen found the best companionship in Molly, a 7-year-old black Yorkie who keeps her busy. Molly loves to go on daily walks and is extremely playful.

Resident Foye Waldrip found herself in a similar situation when her spouse passed. She is thankful for having found Roxy on the internet. The King Charles poodle, who will be 10 years old in December, has brought much-needed companionship to her days.

Cuteness overload is what everyone feels when they see Luca.

“He is sweet and energetic,” said Carolyn Brindisi about the 8-year-old white Bolognese who has been by her side since he was barely 1 year old.

Other furry angels you may see around The Lakeside include 2-year-old Australian Shepherd Buddy; 9-year-old Persian cat Firby; 4-year-old Chihuahua/Corgi mix Charlie; 2-year-old Havanese Buddy; and even a Maine Coon cat who is 18 years-old.
